Evo-Devo of Child Growth III: Premature Juvenility as an Evolutionary Trade-Off

چکیده
Juvenility was previously defined as a distinct clinical life history stage, characterized by adrenarche, decelerating growth and accelerating adiposity. This review presents the theory of evolutionary predictive adaptive strategies for premature juvenility in response to (mostly) energy supply, but also to other environmental cues. In the absence of longitudinal adrenal androgen levels, premature juvenility can be diagnosed by auxological criteria. Syndromes of short stature that are associated with premature juvenility include Prader-Willi syndrome, Silver-Russell syndrome and Noonan syndrome, and it is part of the pygmy adaptive shortness of stature. The review elucidates in evolutionary terms the association of premature juvenility with SGA and PCOS. Copyright © 2010 S. متن کاملEvo-devo of child growth II: human life history and transition between its phases.
UNLABELLED This review attempts to use evolutionary life-history theory in understanding child growth in a broad evolutionary perspective. It uses the data and theory of evolutionary predictive adaptive strategies for transition from one life-history phase to the next, and the inherent adaptive plasticity in the timing of such transitions. Humans evolved to withstand energy crises by decreasing...
متن کاملEvo-devo of human adolescence: beyond disease models of early puberty
Despite substantial heritability in pubertal development, much variation remains to be explained, leaving room for the influence of environmental factors to adjust its phenotypic trajectory in the service of fitness goals. Utilizing evolutionary development biology (evo-devo), we examine adolescence as an evolutionary life-history stage in its developmental context. We show that the transition ...
متن کاملA practical investigation into achieving bio-plausibility in evo-devo neural microcircuits feasible in an FPGA
Many researchers has conjectured, argued, or in some cases demonstrated, that bio-plausibility can bring about emergent properties such as adaptability, scalability, fault-tolerance, self-repair, reliability, and autonomy to bio-inspired intelligent systems. Evolutionary-developmental (evo-devo) spiking neural networks are a very bio-plausible mixture of such bio-inspired intelligent systems th...
متن کاملPart I Thinking about evolution by taking development on board
What is evo-devo? Undoubtedly this is a shorthand for evolutionary developmental biology. There, however, agreement stops. Evo-devo has been regarded as either a new discipline within evolutionary biology or simply a new perspective upon it, a lively interdisciplinary field of studies, or even necessary complement to the standard (neo-Darwinian) theory of evolution, which is an obligate step to...
